"This isn't happening to me!" Have you ever said that? Well . . . I've said it several times. Particularly in those slow-motion moments as I found myself being bucked off my horse, or maybe when I had an unfortunate encounter with a law enforcement officer for my lead foot.
Bailey experienced her first "This isn't happening to me" moment last night at the barrel race. She's not a scared-e-cat. She rides the horses I prefer not to. She's tough and becoming quite a horse-woman.
When you run "exhibitions" at an open jackpot - you are doing just that, paying to have a little exhibition time on your horse in another arena. That being said, the ground isn't worked every fifth barrel racer and can get pretty deep.
Bailey was working Mighty, putting together a nice and easy run - he came out of the first barrel ready to go, she held him up a little and he began his turn into number two. Went to plant his feet in his normal position and the ground was extremely deep. He couldn't get his front feet up underneath him and I watched in slow motion, my daughter and her horse go down on their side. I watch in slow-motion, the horse get up, take a step with my daughters foot still in the stirrup, and then watched in slow motion as she kicked her foot free and sat up.
I began to run in what seemed like "slooowwwww-mooooottiiiooon" into the arena to get my daughter as Mighty ran at a very past pace past me. Got to her, she was okay, kink in her neck and a soar shoulder, couple scrapes but she was all in one piece.
We got Mighty caught, she jumped in the horse trailer to unload her jeans of about 3 lbs of arena dirt and then . . . got right back on. Made a near perfect, easy run on Mighty, then turned around and got on Socks and won second in the 4D.
On the drive home, I asked her, "Bailey, what were you thinking as you rounded the barrel and found yourself going down?" "Mom," she said, "I thought, 'This isn't happending to me!"
It's all in what you do with "This isn't happening to me" that matters.
Blessings~

Bailey has been working really hard with Mighty. He's one of these diamond-in-the-rough horses that we aren't about to get rid of because when he turns on the speed, he's not going to get caught by many.

Oh my! Scary, isn't it! Especially for moms!
But its part of what makes the sport so thrilling. Sure glad that foot came out of the stirrup though! Read somewhere recently that early day cowboy boots were made with the straight shank so that they would come off rather than keep a man's (woman's) foot in there. And I thought it was just to look sharp!
Maybe a reason for not wearing lace-ups?
I'm so happy she's okay! I can only imagine the slow motion you were experiencing as you watched her. She quite the lil cowgirl!
Paula,
Wow...very true. It's all about the outlook and how you respond! I know you're mighty proud of your daughter! I could just picture everything as you described it!
Have a great evening!
Tammy
Glad she was okay and got back on! Praise Jesus for taking care of both of them - and you!
That's scary stuff...so glad she's OK. The stirrup thing is really scary...good thing she's quick to think.
Wow! Being a cowgirl is a full contact sport. That would stress me out!! I am so glad she's OK.
I love your comment, it's true that what matters is how we handle what is thrown at us. That's when our true character shines. Bailey has a beautiful character. THAT she does get from her Mama!
That reminds me of a rather unpleasant thing that happened to me in the arena. Only my horse didn't fall, he decided he didn't want to be a barrel horse and that he didn't like me. Lets just say I rode him until I blew a stirrup then I found myself on the ground with a nice hoofprint on my arm. :)
Oh MY!! I'm glad she is OK!! That is always so scary to watch and then when it's your kid...OHH...
Hey we are doing Old Settlers Saturday night..Are you?!?!
Oh my goodness!! It's so scary when you are a parent and watching your kid and horse fall or horse buck with your kids on. My two year old fell off a horse that spooked and it was just like you said, sloooowww moooottion!! You just can never get there fast enough.
Good for her for getting back on. I have always told my kids that it's not a matter of if you fall off it's just a matter of when. We all fall off. I am so glad your daughter is okay.
I am so happy she is okay. That is scarey watching your kids go down and you are right...you see it happening and it does seem like you are running in slow motion. Glad it turned out alright! Stop over for a visit!! :)
Holy cow!
Bailey, you are a tough one! Good Job to you---LOVE YA
Hang in there mom...isn't that the weirdest feeling to watch your kids in the "slow motion" mode???
Isn't that just crazy!! I am so glad she made it up OK...I so wished DD could have gotten back on Saturday night but she was in to much pain..
I'm so glad you came and found me Saturday night!!! It was so great to see you, if only for just a few minutes :( We definitely need to get together sometime at another rodeo!!
Yep, that's just what cowgirls do... :)
LOL OK I know what I did...I just assumed you would have seen the post on FB first and would know what I was talking about LOL!! Sorry...My natural color really is blonde :~)
