UPDATE: Near death experience . . .

I'm not a doctor or nurse. But I am a mother of four so I guess that makes me an expert! My diagnosis . . . I believe my thumb was dislocated. I couldn't bend the first knuckle, it throbbed up my arm, and I was ready to punch the lights out of anyone that tried to touch it. In a momentary brain lapse, I'm not sure really what I was doing, but I felt a pop, a hollow sounding "POP", felt pain shoot up my arm and then it was gone. I could bend my thumb and now all I have is the bruise. AND its okay if you laughed at the thought of me being drug around the arena or got a little sick thinking about my poor thumb laying in the dirt . . .ALL IS WELL NOW!

I had a fleeting moment of terror . . .

One that causes you to think of the . . .

Could haves - what ifs - Thank You, Lords.

It's really not that bad, but I am quite lucky.

Sis's horse, Mighty, has some minor gate issues, so I just take hold of his right rein and walk her into the alley where she then takes off to make her run. She always moves forward two or three steps before she bolts so that I don't get accidently kicked when he lunges out.

Well, last night, he started acting a little squirrelly, so I slid my hand down closer to the bit to have a better hold and control. Sis's reins are hooked to the bit with a simple brass clip (you know, the kind you can just slide the little button down and place it where you want it and then let it snap back), that kind of clip.

He started to turn on me when we got into the alley and sure nough . . .

my thumb wedged into the area where the clip and the ring of the bit join.

I didn't really feel it because I was talking to Sis and keeping ahold of him.

She said, "Okay, Mom" when I realized I was stuck. . . "Mother, OOKKAAYY".

She DIDN'T realize I was stuck!

And she's off!

Fortunately, my thumb is still on!

She made a good run . . . shaved 3/10th of a second of her first time in that pen. Did really well . . . I went to the bathroom and cried. Ran cold water over my thumb . . . determined the knuckle wasn't broken but NOT bendable, the nail is smashed and turning purple.

I'm really thankful . . . my thumb could have made that run with her, hanging out her bit . . . I could have made that run with her, slamming into the first barrel as she flung me around by my thumb!

Okay, now I am really laughing about this . . . but last night . . . I was in tears. The bad thing about it is . . . texting is extremely difficult without a thumb!!

Thankful for my thumb . . .

Blessings~
P.

Ouch! Sure hope it feels better soon. Glad you got it out and you weren't smashed into the barrel! (I did chuckle a little at the thought of you flying thru the pattern like Tinkerbell - but only a little bit!)

Nah, I didn't chuckle...however I did have that fear of being out of control of the situation....slight anxiety attack here...cannot imagine if I had been THERE!!

Mercy...

All my life my father, a rancher and farmer, has always warned my brother and I to 'keep a tight rein' (in other words mind your business and stay in control).

This saying has special meaning for you!

Oh goodness, how scary for you. At the farm we're always telling the kids to keep their hands away from the metal parts and not to wrap the lead rope around their hands, because their fingers will 'pop off'. That so would have flashed through my mind right then if I'd been you, that my thumb was about to pop off and I'd go back and show the kids and say, "That's what happens!!" Gruesome. Glad and thankful that you're OK. Getting dragged would have been worse, and getting slammed into a barrel would've added insult to injury!!

That is really scary! Yikes! You could have lost your thumb! Glad it popped back into place and that you didn't have to go to the emergency room and have them do it. Your hair really looks wonderful! Love it! Oh to be 41 again.......sigh...... :o)

The Lord was watchin' out for you on that one! Sorry, but I couldn't help but chuckle as you described your thoughts...at the time it wan't funny at all!!

Stuff like that just happens so quickly. I was unloading two of my mustangs at a demo a couple of years ago. I am always wearing gloves, but the day was hot and didn't think much about putting them on. I was hauling with our big trailer...one that's not a stock trailer. It has dividers and I always unhook the horses through the drop down doors at their head. Being small in stature...OK...short...I have to climb up on the wheels to reach the snaps. When I jumped down, my wedding ring caught on the aluminum frame of the door as my body weight tried to pull my finger off. Oh my gosh the tears came flowing.

I almost pushed the ring back on the finger, but I quickly decided that might not be such a good idea and pulled as hard as I could to get it off my aching and quickly swelling finger. The ring was no longer round...it was egg shape and had a crack! I could move my finger so I figured it wasn't broken and never did have it looked at. After a year and a half, my knuckle was still too big to get my ring back on, and I had to have it resized and put a spacer in it so it won't slip around on my finger.

Oops...sorry I babbled for so long! Glad you're OK...make that man of yours give your thumb lots of kisses ;~)
