yes, that's what made me consider going private as well.....that and comments in chinese...dont open those and try to read their "blog"..it will disbale your antivirus and while you can get it back, the irritation isn't worth it!
when our kiddos were little, a whole winter was made bearable with a refrigerator and stove box...took over the living room, but hey, what I wouldn't give to have a do over of it :)
In addition to verification I believe you can requie that they not be annonymous which whould help as well. This will help to ensure that robots are not trolling but true people are typing.

I haven't gotten any weirdo comments but I have gotten spam emails about wanting to list my blog or something. They go directly into my spam.

Goodness! Have you disabled the "google search engine" bots on your settings, yet? Between that, disabling anonymous comments, and setting up word verification, that should help!
